We’re all used to packaging carefully designed to imply a small producer without the resources or interest to employ ‘professional’ packaging design. But here on the yoghurt fixture it’s real, not just implication. The question is how real can you handle your authenticity, when that might mean the cheapest, ugliest plastic bucket or industrial container? Ironically the most traditional pack format here looks the most sophisticated, but maybe that slick photograph should make me wary. On the far right the ceramic pot has a transparent lid to show the naturally separated fat that characterizes authentically strained yoghurt. Now how good would that look on a table in Northern Europe!
